Queensland’s BIG4 Atherton Woodlands Tourist Park has been awarded Silver status under TripAdvisor’s worldwide GreenLeaders™ Programme.
The GreenLeaders™ Programme was developed by TripAdvisor in conjunction with the United Nations Environment Programme, Ecotourism Australia and EarthCheck to help travellers identify and book accommodation providers that implement environmentally friendly practices.
BIG4 Atherton Woodlands Tourist Park’s Silver status was based on its ongoing efforts to help the environment including the introduction of a recycling program in the Park and ensuring minimisation of site disturbance to the landscape when carrying out infrastructure works in the Park. Of note, the Park has installed six solar powered cabins built from recycled and sustainable materials with an eight-star energy rating. For each stay in an eco-cabin, the Park sponsors a juvenile Hawksbill turtle named “Woody” who currently resides at the eco-certified Cairns Turtle Rehabilitation Centre.
After the park’s application was assessed against a set of criteria, the BIG4 Atherton Woodlands Tourist Park’s TripAdvisor listing now hosts the coveted GreenLeaders™ leaf badge and lists their newly attained status.
Park owners Patrice and Quentin Fletcher are thrilled to receive the recognition, saying it’s important to respond to travellers’ attitudes and values as they place increasing significance on environmental welfare.
“Being situated in the stunning natural setting of the Atherton Tablelands, it is fitting for us to foster and conserve the environment. We are looking forward to continuing these efforts and moving towards Gold and Platinum status in the future,” Patrice said.
BIG4 Holiday Parks CEO Steven Wright says the certification is a great achievement for the park and a major credit to their environmental endeavours.
“Considering the GreenLeaders™ Programme was developed for hotels and B&Bs, we are extremely proud of
BIG4 Atherton Woodlands for breaking into this market and meeting this level of tourism standards. No doubt other BIG4 parks across Australia will be inspired to do the same,” Steven said.
Businesses are categorised between Bronze, Silver, Gold or Platinum awards. The more green practices a property has, the higher the TripAdvisor GreenLeaders™ level it can achieve.
BIG4 Atherton Woodlands Tourist Park is just 1.5km from the Atherton township and is a great base to explore the region’s attractions, including the Millaa Millaa Falls, Lake Tinaroo, the Crystal Caves and the Atherton Forest Mountain Bike Park. The park boasts a wide variety of accommodation options, from three-bedroom villas and cabins to lush powered and unpowered camping sites.
