Mareeba Wetlands

Discover the rare and beautiful wildlife of the Australian outback at the Mareeba Tropical Savanna and Wetland Reserve.

We are Located only an hour’s drive from Cairns or Port Douglas and set in the heart of a spectacular 5,000 acre conservation Reserve. Accommodation in safari tents is available onsite at Jabiru Camp.

We are closed during the wet season months of January to March inclusive except by prior arrangement.


Tours & Activities For Day Visitors: Looking over Clancy’s Lagoon is the Visitor Centre. Tours commence from here. There is a cafe' for drinks and snacks. Entry, use of Visitor Centre facilities - adult $10.00, child $5.00 and family $25.00

Self-guided Walking Trails: Walks, from 2km to 15km. Maps are available at the Centre. The walks are well marked, and offer some spectacular views. Price is included in reservation entry fee.

Guided Boat Cruise: For a truly peaceful experience, cruise on Clancy’s Lagoon in the electrically operated Buralga. Sit back and watch the lilies float by, get close to the resident Jacanas and Pygmy-geese, and, for the lucky ones, a close up of the Freshwater Crocodiles! The cruise takes 30-40 mins in the company of one of the Wetlands guides, and can be tailored to all ages and interests. Boat tours depart from the Visitor Centre during the day or can be pre-booked.
Conservation Levy + Guided Boat Tour 40 minute boat tour with Wetlands Guide OR talk in the Visitor Centre (if boat unavailable or for large groups). Max 11 persons for boat tour. Adult $20.00, child $10.00

Canoeing: For the more energetic, canoes may be hired for paddling on Clancy’s Lagoon. These beautiful hand crafted timber canoes, made by local craftsman Grainger Morris, can seat two adults, or one adult and two children. Why not take a picnic from the Centre and explore the shoreline at your own pace. Canoe Hire Capacity 2 adults or 2 adults + 2 small children is $15.00 per hour

Twilight Safari: This very popular tour departs from the Visitor Centre each afternoon 2½ hours before sunset, (3.30pm in winter, 4pm in summer).
Levy + Twilight Safari -Min 2 hours guided interpretive tour by vehicle and boat. Billy tea and cake/homemade biscuits, cheese and wine. adult $65.00, child $32.50

Binocular HireDeposit required (eg; swiped credit card) $10.00 per tour.

Directions:

The Reserve is located 6.5kms north of the township of Mareeba. When travelling from Cairns, drive to Mareeba via the Gilles or Rex Range roads, then turn north towards Mt Molloy on the Peninsula Development Road. 6.5km north of Mareeba is the the township of Biboohra where you will take a left turn opposite the Biboohra store and service station into Pickford Road.

If you are travelling from the north (Cape York, Port Douglas or Mt Molloy) heading towards Mareeba, Pickford Road will be on your right.

Pickford Road is a gravelled road suitable for conventional vehicles. It is a total of 7km from the Biboohra turnoff to the Visitor Centre - 4km to the Reserve entry gate, and a further 3km to the Visitor Centre reception carpark.

There is disabled access to the Visitor Centre and its facilities.

Our Opening Hours are day visitors between 10am and 4pm (6pm for Twilight Safari guests) Wednesdays to Sundays (inclusive) and on Public Holidays during the Dry Season (April to December). Special access arrangements apply to overnight guests.
