The Tourism Industry

The following points are part of a recent report prepared by TTNQ “Economy Driver”.

These statistics are directly aimed at our region.

  •  Tourism value equates to $11,000 per person, per year One in 5 jobs in this region is in tourism

  •  One in every 10 business’s in this region relies directly in Tourism

  •  Unemployment reached 14% in 2009, following the axing of almost half the direct air services from Japan

  •  In the financial year to June 2010, 2 million visitors arrived in Tropical North Queensland injecting 2.4 Billion in the region’s economy

  •  Tourism is without question the regions largest industry after it took over agriculture in the 1980’s. Today valued at 1.7 Billion

 Total value of tourism to the Tablelands region is $53.5 million.

 The Tablelands region attracts 520,000 visitors per annum; 114,000 are International Visitors and 406,000 are domestic visitors and the majority are from Queensland. The dispersal of these visitors mainly centred around Kuranda, Mareeba, Atherton and Yungaburra.

  •  75% of visitors are between the ages of 45 – 60

  •  86% of visitors were in the region for holidays

  •  34% of visitors utilised a hire care with 51% using their own private car

  •  76% of visitors were ‘over-nighting’ in the region as opposed to visiting just for one day.

Why be a Member of Tropical Tablelands Tourism?

There is not a business, professional service or commercial operation within our region that does not ultimately receive some benefit contributed to the local economy by tourism. It is in the direct interest of all those who benefit from tourism to participate in and contribute to effective promotion of the entire region and the planned management of its marketing activities.

To support and promote our region’s tourism industry Tropical Tablelands Tourism’s is able to meet the organisations objectives including:-

  1. To effectively market and promote the Atherton Tablelands/Cairns Highlands to directly increase visitation – expenditure and length of stay – to the region and ensure the tourism corridor into our neighbouring regions like Gulf Savannah & Cassowary Coast are open and working efficiently;

  2. To encourage the local business community to be involved in and understand the value of tourism;

  3. To assist in the establishment and development of Tourism products and facilities with the immediate region.

 

Tropical Tablelands Tourism Membership

Tropical Tablelands Tourism offers a five (5) tiered level of membership: Platinum; Gold; Silver; Bronze and Supporter of Tourism.
