Seasonal Work
The Atherton Tablelands are filled with a variety of fruit and vegetable crops, which means that there is plenty of seasonal work available.
Main crops grown are sugar cane, peanuts, maize/corn, potatoes, avocados, macadamia nuts, longans, lychees, citrus, sweet potato, banana, coffee, mango, strawberries, native flowers, roses, tomatoes and yams. Dairying and beef cattle are also main industries.
Soil varies from Atherton to Mareeba. Atherton soil is generaly red, structured, high clay soil with an acid neutral pH, well drained with good fertility and derived from Basalt. Mareeba/Dimbulah soil is a sandy loam/sandy clay loam over a red, structured, coarse sandy clay soil with a slightly acidid pH and well drained, derived from granite and has inherent low fertility.
