Things to do
There are many things to do on the Atherton Tablelands.
Have a look at our Region Guide for a searchable list of accommodation and attractions in the region, or check out our Towns in Detail for what to do from each town.
Here is just a few more things to do.
Popular Walking Tracks - just a few of our favourite walking tracks on teh Atherton Tablelands.
Monthly Markets - a guide to the local markets on the Atherton Tablelands.
Wheelchair Friendly Attactions - a list of some wheel chair accessible sites on the Atherton Tablelands.
Other suggestions:
Mungalli Cheese Dairy - sample some of the different cheeses made in the factory. A viewing window enables you to watch the day to day operations of bottling milk or packing cheese (when running). It's also an ideal spot for a light snack or full meal, cold or hot drinks or some sumptuous cheese cakes.
Nerada Tea Plantation - Nerada offers you the chance to do a guided tour through the tea factory to give you an idea of just what is involved in making the finished product..........tea bags. Tours are by paid guides only. There is also a coffee shop where you can sit and relax while sipping on a cuppa. There are many different types from 'normal' tea, to Chai Tea which is made from a combination of tea leaves, cloves, cinnamon and more.
Steam Train Rides - although the Atherton to Herberton train is not yet running, the Ravenshoe to Tumoulin steam train has recommenced trips on Sundays only at 1.30pm from the station in Ravenshoe.
Hot Air Balloon Flights - leave from Mareeba, floating over the farmlands of the Tablelands in peace and tranquility. Half hour or full hour trips available. Ask for a special discounted rate at the Atherton Tableland Information Centre. (save approx $20 per person)
Crystal Caves - do a self guided tour through the magical Crystal Caves, located in Main Street Atherton. Although the caves are man made, they are an excellent replica of what a real cave looks like. The collection of real gemstones, minerals and fossils are strategically placed throughout the caves, allowing you to get an idea of what they'd look like in the natural formation. The tour takes approx 45mins to complete. Ideal for kids and adults alike.
Chillagoe Limestone Caves - located 2 hours drive from Atherton, you have a choice of 3 main limestone caves to go through. Tours are paid guided and generally don't have to be pre-booked.
Rainforestation - this is an ideal place to see a wide range of attractions from a tour through the rainforest in an army duck, looking at the tropical fruit orchard, learning how to throw a boomerang, watching spear throwing, learning the digeridoo, learning about the Aboriginal culture, get a photo taken with the koalas, check out the animals or just eat from the huge menu at the restaurant. Dine on gourmet dishes including kangaroo steak, crocodile and buffalo, as well as normal meats.
Granite Gorge - located near Walkamin, the gorge is a privately owned attraction, with lots of unusual rock formations and flowing streams. Daily feeding of rock wallabies and other 'wildlife' and birds. There is a cost to get in, but if travelling with a caravan or tent, there is a camping area available for a small fee.
Brochures on all the above can be collected from the Atherton Tableland Information Centre, Main Street Atherton.
