Cross the charm of the English Lakes District with the wilds of the Amazonian Forest and add a dash of Parisian flair and you have the couple’s paradise of Yungaburra on the Central Atherton Tablelands.
Just over an hour from Cairns (70km) Yungaburra village is as pretty as a picture, chocka block with heritage listed buildings. A charming destination in itself, it’s also a handy hub for exploring the natural beauty and unique locations of this part of the world.
Where to stay:
Chambers Wildlife Rainforest Lodges are hidden amongst 1200 acres (64ha) of Lake Eacham’s lush highland rainforest, with a wildlife viewing platform, extensive walking trails and a swimming pool.
Eden House (pictured) has six luxury cottages dotted around tropical gardens in the heart of Yungaburra. Try champagne on arrival, spa baths and a breakfast hamper for a special stay.
Birds ‘n’ Bloom cottages are a comfortable, spacious haven with gorgeous grounds specially planted to attract colourful birds and butterflies as well as discerning guests. And you can help yourself to the seasonal fruits in the garden on your doorstep.
Where to adventure:
Yungaburra Markets are held on the fourth Saturday of the month and should not be missed. Two hundred and fifty growers, producers and artisans attract a big, happy, relaxed crowd of buyers and browsers. Great food, great bargains and plenty of local colour and character.
Lake Eacham’s clear water and ring of rainforest make for a perfect picnic spot. Take a dip, go for a bush walk and bask in the serenity.
The Waterfall Circuit is one of the jewel’s in the region’s crown. Roaring cascades, mountain streams and sweet swimming spots make it the Atherton Tableland’s own wet and wild.
Historic Village Herberton
This replica late 1800s village has been put together with care and flair. The buildings are the real deal, saved and then restored from all around the Far North, making this open air museum a fascinating place to explore.
Platypus
Get up early, take yourself down to the walk next to Peterson Creek in Yungaburra and you are almost certain to see Australia’s weirdest, wonderful and most elusive furry mammal. Be as quiet as possible, watch for bubbles and you should see a platypus foraging for breakfast along the banks. Or try the viewing platform anytime. You may just get lucky.
Where to eat:
Nick’s Restaurant is a bit of Europe in Tropical North Queensland, mixing local produce with Italian and Swiss cuisine. The décor is ski chalet, a cosy fire is lit in winter and owner Nick is a bit of a local legend.
Resplendent federation architecture and a friendly atmosphere make the Yungaburra Hotel a popular spot. Built in 1910, this sturdy landmark is a must visit for its delicious pub grub as well its cedar and oak construction.
Our Place Restaurant combines great food with impeccable service. The lamb shanks are to die for and they know exactly what to do with a Tablelands steak.
