Nine Steps to Self-Care on the Atherton Tablelands

By Sarah Latham

There’s more to discover on the Atherton Tablelands than just a beautiful holiday destination. Read our nine steps to self-care the Atherton Tablelands way and uncover how a visit to the Atherton Tablelands could be just what the wellness doctor ordered.

  1. Disconnect from daily life at the Canopy Treehouses

Leave the hustle and bustle of daily life behind as you check into the Canopy Treehouses. Set on 100 acres of pristine rainforest, the Canopy Treehouses are one of the best places to put your out of office alert on your emails, your phone on silent and disconnect for a little while.

  1. Swap Spotify for the real thing

There’s a reason why the sounds of waterfalls and streams often feature in relaxation playlists – they do wonders for your health.

When visiting the Atherton Tablelands, you can leave the headphones and Spotify subscription behind and enjoy the benefits of listening live to some of the most picturesque waterfalls in Australia. Millaa Millaa Falls anyone?

  1. Rejuvenate at the Innot Hot Springs

Save on the pricy day spas and make your way to Innot Hot Springs. Found just 20 minutes from Ravenshoe on the Atherton Tablelands, spend an afternoon relaxing in one of the six thermal pools at Innot Hot Springs Health and Leisure Park.

Over 100 years ago, the bubbling water from the nearby Nettle Creek was actually bottled and shipped to Europe as a health treatment. While we’re not sure these waters ever had healing powers, we do think that you’ll feel all the more relaxed after a dip here surrounded by the native Australian bush.

  1. Get the heart pumping

In addition to focusing the mind, the Atherton Tablelands is teeming with hikes that will get your body moving and heart pumping. Regular exercise has numerous health benefits including increased energy and better sleeping patterns – plus, it’s fun!

Choose from the sealed pathways around Lake Eacham, the dirt tracks of Stewart Head Trail or even challenge yourself with a bucket list hike up Bartle Frere, Queensland’s highest mountain!

  1. Take inspiration from the world’s oldest tropical rainforest

The Wet Tropics World Heritage Area is home to the world’s oldest tropical rainforest. Stretching along the Queensland coast between Cooktown and north of Townsville, you can access a part of this incredible rainforest area at the Mamu Tropical Skywalk.

Wander along the multi-levelled walkways, take part in the audio tour and discover how parts of the Tropical North Queensland rainforest have survived against all the odds to thrive as it does today, some 130 million years in the making. We’ll be adding the Wet Tropics Rainforest to our next inspo board, that’s for sure.

  1. Get your fruit fix at Kuranda Village

Stock up on your essential antioxidants, vitamins, and fibre at one of the many delicious (and nutritious!) cafes in Kuranda Village. For food that loves you back, you can’t go pass Fruibies, which serves healthy and delicious meals from mostly locally sourced organic produce.

  1. Rise with the sun (literally!)

Take all the benefits you’ve heard about being an early riser and then add this view. Rise with the sun above the Mareeba region with Hot Air Balloon. Take a moment to appreciate everything around you as you glide slowly with the wind. We can’t think of a better way to start the day.

  1. Reconnect with the universe

Looking up at the night sky can be a great way to put our problems into perspective. Take advantage of the lack of big cities and light pollution on the Atherton Tablelands and spend an evening stargazing. For 6 months of the year the magical Milky Way will be visible over the night sky, providing an extra source of amazement and potentially even some clarity.
