Savannah Way Exploring

Embark on an incredible journey along the Savannah Way, starting from the Atherton Tablelands and stretching through the natural wonders of Undara, Talaroo, and finishing with a memorable rail trip to Croydon. This 7-day itinerary showcases diverse landscapes and unique experiences along this iconic route.

Day 1: Atherton Tablelands

Stop 1: Ravenshoe

Start your adventure in Ravenshoe, Queensland’s highest town. Explore the Millaa Millaa, Zillie, and Ellinjaa Falls along the Waterfall Circuit. These picturesque spots are ideal for a refreshing dip and capturing beautiful photos.

Stop 2: Malanda

Continue to Malanda, known for its rainforest walks and dairy farms. Visit the Malanda Falls Conservation Park, where you can enjoy easy rainforest walks and spot tree-kangaroos and various bird species.

Day 2: Mount Hypipamee and Herberton

Stop 3: Mount Hypipamee National Park

Head to Mount Hypipamee National Park to marvel at the volcanic crater and the surrounding rainforest. Take the short walk to the crater’s edge for stunning views and explore the nearby Dinner Falls.

Stop 4: Historic Village Herberton

Travel to Herberton to visit the Historic Village, which showcases over 50 original buildings from the town’s early days. This living museum offers a glimpse into Australia’s pioneering history – a fitting start to your Savannah Way journey.

Day 3: Undara Volcanic National Park

Stop 5: Undara Experience

Drive to Undara Volcanic National Park to explore the world’s longest lava tube system. Approximately 190,000 years ago, a massive volcanic eruption created these incredible hollow tubes. Join a guided tour to learn about these ancient formations. Stay overnight in unique accommodations such as converted railway carriages.

Day 4: Talaroo Hot Springs

Stop 6: Talaroo Hot Springs

Continue your journey to Talaroo Hot Springs, located on a working cattle station. Relax in the natural thermal springs and take a guided tour to learn about the cultural and ecological significance of the area. Book a stay in one of their eco-tents complete with private bathing facilities.

Day 5: Normanton

Stop 7: Explore the charming town of Normanton. Visit the famous Purple Pub, the historic Burns Philp Building, and take a photo with the replica of Krys the Crocodile, the largest saltwater crocodile ever caught. Don’t miss a visit to the Normanton Railway Station, a beautiful heritage-listed site.

Day 6:

Stop 8: Ride the Gulflander

Experience the historic Gulflander train journey from Normanton to Croydon *Wednesday only. The Gulflander offers a unique outback rail experience, passing through stunning landscapes and historic towns. Known as the “Tin Hare,” this iconic train runs on the original 1891 heritage-listed railway track. On arriving in Croydon, explore this quaint town rich in gold mining history and heritage sites. The train departs Normanton at 8.30am and arrives at Croydon at 1.30pm. Take a stroll through the town and immerse yourself in its fascinating past. Trans North Bus & Coach offers a service departing Croydon at 3.25pm returning to Normanton at 5pm. Alternatively, you can overnight in Croydon and do the return rail journey back on Thursday morning.

Day 7: Cairns

Make your way back to Cairns, a nine-hour drive. Reflect on the diverse landscapes, rich history, and unique experiences you’ve enjoyed along the Savannah Way.
