Train Experiences on the Atherton Tablelands

Change it up and take a train to explore the Atherton Tablelands. There's everything from stationary train cafes to steam trains and scenic railways waiting for you to visit.

 

Kuranda Scenic Railway

Depart in the morning from Freshwater Station to travel on the century-old Kuranda Scenic Railway, through scenic rainforest as well as several tunnels and past impressive waterfalls views of Stoney Creek Falls and Barron Falls. Arrive in the picturesque village of Kuranda to enjoy breakfast in one of its quirky cafes and explore the markets before heading back down.

The Station Café

Take your taste for trains to a literal level at the Station Café in Atherton. Hop aboard a stationary train carriage and tuck into tasty breakfast, brunch and lunch options. Don’t forget to keep your phone camera handy as the café is prettily peppered with hanging baskets and greenery.

Herberton Heritage Railway

Have you ever sat on a vintage train? The volunteer run Herberton Heritage Railway Train rides between Herberton Station and Historic Village Herberton every Sunday from 10am to 2pm.

Savannahlander

Travel in style from Cairns to Forsayth and back over four days with this classic 1960 rail motor. Stop at epic locations such as Undara, Chillagoe, Talaroo or Cobbold Gorge. While on the train, make sure to visit the driver to look over their shoulder for the best view of the ever changing landscapes.

Undara Experience

Have you ever slept in a vintage railway carriage? At Undara Experience, you can spend the night in a beautifully restored Queensland Rail carriage. Standing underneath shady gum trees, the carriages have their own ensuite and a shared deck.
