Guest Blog by Sarah Latham

Whether you’re visiting Atherton Tablelands in the school holidays or looking for some weekend family fun, there is no doubt there is a wealth of kid friendly attractions at your disposal on the Atherton Tablelands. Read on to discover seven of our unforgettable Atherton Tablelands attractions for kids.

  1. Birdworld Kuranda

Starting off with our list of unforgettable Atherton Tablelands attractions with kids is Birdworld Kuranda. Situated in the Kuranda Village, walk through one of Australia’s most impressive free-flying bird aviaries. Home to over 350 birds, here you and the kids can view the infamous cassowary up close, hand feed the chatty galahs and mingle with the majestic Amazonian macaw.

Our top tip: Combine with Kuranda Koala Gardens and Australian Butterfly Sanctuary for the ultimate family friendly day out.

  1. The Crystal Caves

Ready to have your world ‘rock’ed or looking for a hidden ‘gem’ on the Atherton Tablelands? Well, if you can excuse the puns, we have the spot for you. Found in Mareeba on the Atherton Tablelands, The Crystal Caves are an exciting global collection of natural crystals and pre-historic fossils that will delight and charm the whole family. While you’re here be sure to crack a geode and uncover crystals grown over 40 million years ago.

  1. Historic Village Herberton

Enjoy a family fun day out as you wander through the Historic Village Herberton. Not only is a visit to the Historic Village full of adventure, but it’s also one of the best ways to experience and educate yourself on part of the living history of the area. Explore the shops, tearooms, and grounds before admiring the fashion of decades past and marvelling at the antique motor vehicles. Plan your visit here.

  1. Lake Barrine Boat Cruise

Looking for a little bit of peace on your family friendly day out? We recommend exploring the tranquil Lake Barrine. In addition to delicious scones and tea from the Lake Barrine Tea House, there are afternoon and evening boat cruises available, providing entertainment and enjoyment for the whole family.

  1. Chillagoe Caves

Bring out your inner explorer at the Chillagoe Caves. Located a two-hour drive west from Atherton, explore an ancient coral reef that over hundreds of millions of years has dried into an incredible network of caves, limestone, and stunning outback landscapes. While some caves are free to enter and explore, we recommend exploring the Donna, Trezkinn and Royal Arch caves only accessible via a ranger-guided tour for the full experience.

  1. Skyrail Rainforest Cableway

Sail above the canopy of the World Heritage Listed rainforest with Skyrail Rainforest Cableway. Stretching between Cairns and Kuranda, Skyrail Rainforest Cableway is a great way to begin (or end) your day out in the Atherton Tablelands. Your children will be amazed as you skim the very top of the canopy before delving deep into the tropical rainforest to explore the forest floor at the two dedicated stops along the way. We also recommend upgrading to Diamond View for a unique glass floor experience.
